September 2024 Newsletter

Now there are those who might say that this summer has been a little bit underwhelming, but we’d rather look on the bright side and celebrate the joys of autumn here in Breage Parish and the Wheal Vor area. Misty atmospheric sunrises, multi-hued foliage and a plentiful harvest of blackberries in the Cornish hedges! Not to mention all the wonderful local community events reminding us that we are at our best when we get together and celebrate!

We all had a great time a the Tea Treat this year so let’s look forward to many more such community events in the future – send us your photos of the day via our facebook page.

We’re keen to compile a bit of the local history of the area and the wonderful people of the parish so if you have any tales to share or questions you’d like answered about life in this beautiful part of the world let us know! For instance we’ve heard that Carleen is actually named after someone called by that name – we wonder what their history was and how the hamlet came to be called after him? and why is Black Lane so called? – all the local lanes that boringly just get labelled “Unnamed road” on our SatNavs – we bet they did have a name once! Does anyone out there know what that was? Maybe we can campaign to have “Unnamed road” renamed! Feel free to pass on any local photos/memories via our facebook page.

Did You Know?

In the UK with the exception of oil, gas, gold and silver the state does not own mineral rights and in general minerals are in private ownership and are seperated from the surface rights which were commonly acquired through purchase of a property. This is an extant law that dates back to the Norman Conquest. There is a presumption that land is owned by the Crown until proved otherwise. Crown land is managed on behalf of the government by the Crown Estate.
Other minerals in private ownership have no national licensing system for exploration and extraction although planning permission must be obtained from a mineral planning authority for their extraction. The Duchy of Cornwall, a separate legal entity to the Crown Estate has, in recent years, registered many of the mineral rights it owns beneath Cornish Land.
Do you know who owns the land beneath your home?

Food For Thought

Approximately 4-7% of Global CO2 emissions are due to the mining industry. This compares to 2.5% due to air travel. How can we mine our way out of a climate crisis when it’s one of the largest industrial contributors? Any argument for new mining needs to be backed up with verifiable figures for exactly how much of the metals produced are going to offset emissions from other sources such as transportation. There needs to be a clear link between the metal mined at source and it’s use for renewable energy projects vs the emissions used in producing and transporting it. Any tin mined in Cornwall is likely to be transported abroad for refining and then sold on the world market where its destination for clean energy projects in the UK is going to be very hard to trace…
