Media Statement regarding recent news coverage and television reports (Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times)

Updated: Nov 14

Great Wheal Vor Community and Environment Group, 12th November 2024.

We are pleased that recent media coverage by Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times which included a section on Wheal Vor may have raised public awareness about the exploratory mining activities affecting our community. The heightened attention is important as we are working to protect the environment, wildlife, and the wellbeing of local residents.

The key points of concern to our group and the wider community that were/were not raised in the program: -

●       Our group is dedicated to safeguarding the natural environment of the Wheal Vor area. It is also concerned to protect local residents who have to face the uncertainty caused by the activities of mining companies.

●       Any Investors should question the long-term sustainability and potential legal liabilities associated with mining ventures in an area which bears the scars of historic mining. Investors may also note that community consent cannot be taken for granted.

●       Our community is poorly served by the current mining legislation which appears to encourage the aspirations of mining companies. The separation of mineral rights from land ownership creates uncertainties and ambiguities about the legal rights of both landowners and mining operators.

●       The promises of “sustainability” by mining companies may not offer genuine environmental benefits and their environmental risk mitigation proposals and lack of transparency are less than convincing.

Our rural environment is threatened by a perceived need for minerals that has not been quantified or validated. While the objectives of speculative mining companies might be portrayed as a positive contribution towards a low carbon economy, their goal is to generate profit, potentially at the expense of our land, water, and our peace of mind. We welcome engagement with local and national authorities on this issue.
